Are Two 750 Square Foot Apartments the Same Size?
November 19, 2020
When you’re looking to rent an apartment, you probably have a list of questions to ask the Leasing Specialist when you first call. Do you have any 2 bedroom apartments? What is the nearest intersection? How much is it? Is there parking? What amenities are available? And, of course, how big is it?
With that information in mind, you start comparing two 750 square foot apartments – after all, they should be comparable, right?
Well, that all depends on whether you’ve looked at the units or their floor plans.
Two units of the same technical size can have very different “livable” spaces. Look at the space and figure out how much is wasted with long hallways, configurations that don’t fit standard furniture and wasted space. Really look at the size of each of the two bedrooms. Can you fit a Queen size bed comfortably? Is there adequate storage space? Is there enough kitchen storage space for all of your glasses, dishes, platters, gadgets and small appliances?
Next, consider the walls and windows. Can you layout your furniture properly? Are the walls long enough for your couch? Do you need to put anything with a back to a window or balcony? Is there an appropriate spot for an open den or office area?
Then, think about your lifestyle. Do you like to sit at a table to eat your meals or do you grab and go- so an island is sufficient? Do you like to cook? Do you have enough counter space?
Also remember to check what is included in the square footage calculation. Some listings include your outdoor balcony in the overall square footage – others do not. If you have a nice usable balcony, that space can have a big impact – but can also account for a lot of the square footage.
The bottom line is, no two apartment layouts are the same. Just because to units have the same 750 square foot approximate measurement doesn’t mean they have the same amount of true living space. So, look at a floor plan. Think about where you would place your furniture. If possible, ask to see photos of furnished suites so you can really visualize the space you’ll home.
